Enka Music

Enka (演歌) is a popular Japanese music genre.
Enka music is especially popular with the postwar generation in Japan.
To this generation, Enka songs bring back some of the nostalgia of the “good old days”.
Enka singers, especially women, usually perform wearing a kimono.
Male enka performers tend to wear formal dress or traditional japanese attire.

The first Enka Singer is Hachiro Kasuga, Michiya Mihashi and Hideo Murata.
Hikawa Kyousyi is my favourite Enka singers.
Hes currently the most popular male Japanese enka singer in Japan.

Anyways, nowadays you see some unexpected people in the field of Enka music. One young fellow from the US named ジェロ (Jero).
His grandmother was Japanese and she taught him the language, and that they would sing Enka together as a young boy.
You can watch here. He’s dressed like a rapper but he has an amazing Enka voice!
